Yongzhong

Early Eastern Zhou dynasty (8th -- 7th century BC)
Height: 21.6 cm

Zhong are bell-like musical instruments used in banquets and rituals during the Zhou period. Three variations of the instruments are known. The yongzhong has a tubular shaft and is suspended in an angle when being played. The niuzhong has a looped top while the bozhong has elaborate pierced work on top. Unlike the yongzhong, they were hung vertically when struck.
