Hu

Early Eastern Zhou dynasty (8th -- 7th century BC)
Height: 29.5 cm

Hu are vessels for storing wine and are usually used in pairs. This fine example is decorated with vigorous wave designs on its exterior. An inscription on the interior wall reads, this wine flask was made on the day of the ding hai in the first month of the year for the gentleman Shutang from the State of Cai. May he enjoy a vigorous old age without limit. May his sons and grandsons forever treasure and use this vessel.î

Inscriptions on bronze vessels may serve the purpose of an eulogy, a memorandum or an admonition.
