We are currently conducting a ten-day Cultural and Historical Tour to visit the old and new Capital Cities of China (Xi An and Beijing) for the boys of Anglo Chinese School (Independent).

Scheduled to take place during the June school holidays, the tour itinerary is specially designed to provide an immersing cultural experience to the students. All participants are required to attend preparatory lectures and video sessions before the tour.

Xi An is chosen because of its significance in the history of Chinese civilisation. It showcases artefacts from China's past spanning from late Paleolithic period (+/- 2000 BC) to the Tang dynasty (618 -- 906 AD), a total timeframe of more than 3,000 years. About 11 known dynasties in Chinese history had located their Capital city in Xi An or its vicinity, leaving their traces behind readily, waiting to be unearthed.

In the 1920s a peasant unearthed a life-sized terra cotta warrior while digging a well in the Lintong County, east of Xi An. Once the warrior sculpture was removed, the water in the well drained off and this was regarded as a bad omen hence, the sculpture was reburied. Then in 1974, three villagers were digging a well at the exact spot and this time they uncovered part of a pit of the life-sized terra cotta soldiers and horses. Later, we know this as the burial entourage guiding the tomb palace of the first Emperor of China, Qin Shihuang.

In March 1990, a group of workers building a highway leading to Xi An Airport discovered some pits containing pottery warriors. This time, they have stumbled upon the Han Jingdi Mausoleum. Today, the excavated pieces are displayed in a specially built museum.

A highlight of the tour is the full day trip to visit the mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor, the forefather of the Chinese race, and the Yellow River, which is the crucial mother river, sustaining the lives of millions of Chinese people.

Our tour will end in Beijing, China's current Capital City. With the fall of Tang dynasty, China's economic focus had since shifted Northward, and Beijing was the site for the Capital City of subsequent dynasties (Yuan, Ming and Qing) for the next one thousand years. The itinerary in Beijing will continue to tell the history of China after Tang dynasty and providing a better understand of the motherland of Chinese Culture.
